Bidspirit auction | A Chinese Black Lacquer and
A Chinese Black Lacquer and Brass Mounted Jewellery Cabinet - A Chinese-style black lacquer jewellery cabinet of rectangular form featuring a hinged top lid and two front-opening doors. The exterior is finished in polished black lacquer and decorated with hand-painted red and gold-toned motifs depicting birds perched on flowering branches. The two front doors open to reveal three internal drawers, each fitted with an oval brass pull. A single larger drawer is situated on the right side of the cabinet. The interior compartments and the side drawer are lined with a red patterned textile. The piece is extensively fitted with engraved brass hardware, including decorative corner braces, hinges, and butterfly-form front latches. Large swinging bail handles are mounted to each side. The brass backplates behind these side handles feature an incised circular design consisting of geometric lines that form a stylized character, consistent with the Chinese symbol for longevity (Shou). This mark is decorative and does not spell out a maker name. The cabinet is accompanied by a traditional-style brass bar lock with a sliding shackle and a matching key, both featuring simple incised floral and geometric patterns; no manufacturer marks are readable.
