Bidspirit auction | Two Carved Wood Cherub Figures
Two Carved Wood Cherub Figures - A lot comprising two hand-carved wood figures of cherubic subjects. The first is a full-length putto depicted in a dynamic, seated or flying pose with arms outstretched. It is carved from a dark-toned wood with a stained finish that clearly shows faceted chisel marks across the torso, limbs, and draped loincloth. The reverse features a small, twisted metal hanging loop embedded into the wood between the shoulder blades. The second figure is a cherub head with attached wings, also known as a cherubim. This piece is finished in polychrome paint over a gesso or plaster ground. The face is painted in cream tones with red lips and black pupils, framed by carved, brown-painted hair. The wings are painted in a vibrant blue with incised feather detailing highlighted in gold gilding. The reverse shows the natural wood grain and a small nail to which a string loop is attached for wall mounting. Neither figure bears any maker marks, signatures, or labels.
