The Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments. London: G. E. Eyre and W. Spottiswoode, 1856. Full Leather. - A large mid-19th century family Holy Bible, bound in full black morocco leather. The boards feature decorative blind-tooled borders, and the spine is constructed with five raised bands, with the title HOLY BIBLE lettered in gilt. The volume is secured by an ornate, oversized brass clasp and plate assembly. The brass hardware is intricately engraved with foliate scrolls and a decorative border. Centred on the clasp plate is a hand-engraved inscription in cursive script reading A. C. Twentyman. with the date 1856. below it, enclosed within scrolled flourishes. The text block edges appear to be gilt, though the finish is dulled. The binding is a substantial quarto or folio format, characteristic of Victorian domestic lectern Bibles.
