Bidspirit auction | A Collection of UK Provincial
A Collection of UK Provincial and Bank of England Five Pound White Banknotes and Forgery - A collection of historical British currency comprising provincial promissory notes and Bank of England Five Pound notes. The provincial issues include a Dartmouth Bank One Pound note, a Dartmouth General Bank Five Pound note, a Burlington & Driffield Bank Five Pound note, and a Lynn & Norfolk Bank Ten Pound note. These early 19th-century notes are printed on thin paper with decorative vignettes and multiple signatures, often showing evidence of cancellation. The collection features three Bank of England white Five Pound notes: one dated 16 December 1920 (Serial 01/B 75099), signed by E.M. Harvey; one dated 14 June 1947 (Serial M44 088371), signed by K.O. Peppiatt; and one dated 19 March 1952 (Serial X32 046002), signed by P.S. Beale. Each bears the classic Britannia vignette in the upper left. Additionally, the group includes a documented contemporary forgery of a Bank of England Five Pound note dated 19 January 1935, signed in facsimile by K.O. Peppiatt (Serial 11/B 87097). This note is affixed with a detailed handwritten analysis on a yellow paper mount titled Bernhardt Forgery (K.O. Peppiatt 1935), which lists five specific identifying faults in the medallion and engraving, such as One tone only to the sea and Earing missing from ear of Britannia. A small white adhesive label on this mount reads Things to remember Bt. Pam West £70 - June 2014. One note bears a small white adhesive label reading 1952 X32 Pam West £110 - June 2014. The notes are housed in clear plastic numismatic sleeves.
