A South Indian brass and copper alloy octagonal charger, Tanjore, late 19th century - A Tanjore swami-work octagonal charger composed of a copper alloy base with applied brass and copper figurative elements. The central field is densely decorated with chased foliate scrollwork in a style characteristic of the Madras Presidency. The central iconographic arrangement features five primary figures: a central deity in an architectural niche flanked by two standing attendants and two stylized quadrupeds, possibly deer or cows. To the left are three celestial symbols including a sun and a moon, both rendered with human faces. The decorative scheme is executed in the Ganga-Jumna technique, utilizing the contrasting colours of the base and the applied metal overlays. The border consists of a simplified foliate scroll within a raised and bevelled rim. The reverse is plain with evidence of hand-hammering. There are no visible maker marks or inscriptions.
