Bidspirit auction | A Japanese Kutani-style enamelled porcelain
A Japanese Kutani-style enamelled porcelain figural vase, late 19th or early 20th century 41 cm tall - A Japanese porcelain vase of elongated ovoid form featuring a constricted neck and a flaring, everted rim, set upon a circular foot. The exterior is decorated in a polychrome palette dominated by iron-red, green, and orange enamels with underglaze blue and gilt highlights. Two large shaped reserves depict courtly figures, including a woman in traditional robes, positioned within a landscape featuring architecture and a flowering cherry tree. These panels are set against a dense ground of floral sprays, including chrysanthemums and peonies, rendered in thick enamels. The interior of the mouth is further embellished with individual floral sprays and a red diaper-pattern border at the rim. The decoration and palette are characteristic of Kutani ware from the late Edo to Meiji periods. No maker's marks or inscriptions are visible on the exterior surface shown.
