Travel Poster Assens Fyn Danmark
Original vintage travel advertising poster for Assens, a town on the west coast of the island of Funen on the eastern side of the Little Belt in central Denmark. The illustration depicts a statue of Peter Willemoes (1783 - 1808), a Danish naval officer born in Assens. At seventeen he commanded a floating battery, "Flaadebatteri Nr. 1", during the Battle of Copenhagen on 2 April 1801. He fought with such gallantry that the English Admiral Horatio Nelson commended him to the Crown Prince Frederick after the battle, supposedly recommending that he be promoted to admiral. The poster features a the statue of Willemoes in a pop art style, against flattened buildings of Assen with clay red roofs along the bankside, in a bright yellow background. There is also a small drawing of an open pearl in a shell on the left side. Condition: Good condition, minor foxing, creasing and browning at lower edge. Country of printing: Denmark, designer: Berg, size (cm): 99.5x62, year of printing: 1950s.
