Propaganda Poster Barclays Bank Boycott Apartheid South Africa
Original vintage propaganda poster published by the National Confederation of Labour (CNT: Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo) a Spanish confederation of anarcho-syndicalist labour unions who criticised the role of Barclays in South Africa, and supported its general boycott, as it was alleged that the bank was benefiting from doing business in the country during the apartheid era. Following protest against its involvement and boycott by students, Barclays was forced to pull out of the country in 1986. This poster features the Barclays logo (a spread eagle with the three crowns) in white against a blue background with the text reading: Barclays we are leaders in - Trade Unions Repressions - Financement of the Apartheid (Somos lideres en: Represion sindical - Financiacion del "Apartheid"). Published in the late 1980s, the tagline of the poster: "Con el Banco Azul las pasara moradas" and translating as 'With the blue bank, they will pass them purple" might be a reference to the The Purple March, also known as the Purple Rain protests, an anti-apartheid protest that took place in Cape Town on 2 September 1989, four days before South Africa's racially segregated parliament held its elections. A police water cannon with purple dye was turned on thousands of Mass Democratic Movement supporters who poured into the city in an attempt to march on South Africa's Parliament. Condition: Good condition, creasing and foxing. Country of printing: Spain, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 66x46, year of printing: 1980s.
