TWO AFRICAN CHOKWE MWANA PWO WOOD MASKS WITH BEADS.
A pair of African tribal, Pwo or Mwana Pwo, masks, with an elaborate hairline made up of braided fiber fabric, and unusual scarification patterns on the forehead and cheeks originate from the Chokwe people of Angola. Made of 100% wood, fiber, patina. The cross form on the forehead, known as cingelyengelye, is an early Portuguese influence. Masks representing ideal young female beauty, Mwana Pwo were danced during initiation ceremonies to bring fertility and prosperity to the village.
