A fine antique Russian Orthodox icon of Alexander Nevsky hand painted on a wood panel. Presented in an old wooden icon case or kiot with glass, decorated with gold tone overlays. Provenance: Jasper52, New York, NY, United States, Nov 14, 2019, Lot 89. Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky 1221 to 1263, served as Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev and Grand Prince of Vladimir during some of the most difficult times in Kievan Rus' history. Commonly regarded as a key figure of medieval Rus', Alexander was a grandson of Vsevolod the Big Nest and rose to legendary status on account of his military victories over German and Swedish invaders. He preserved Russian statehood and Russian Orthodoxy, agreeing to pay tribute to the powerful Golden Horde.
