RUSSIAN BAROQUE ORTHODOX ICON HOLY FACE OF CHRIST
An antique Baroque-style Russian Orthodox icon representing the Holy Face Jesus Christ or Mandylion, known in the Western tradition as the Image of Edessa. This image refers to the first Christian icon, a square or rectangular cloth upon which a miraculous image of the face of Jesus had been imprinted. In this lot, the cloth is held by the archangels and is decorated with painted roses. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board.
