RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON THE MERCIFUL MOTHER OF GOD
A Russian Orthodox icon depicting Virgin Mary with baby Jesus in the Theotokos iconography. The insription Merciful in the upper left part of the icon refers to a hymn to Mary known in the Western tradition as It Is Truly Met. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Handwritten inscription in Bulgarian on the backside: To Petrcho from Milcho, Sofia, 30-9-1999.
