ANTIQUE AFRICAN WOODEN HEDDLE PULLEY WITH FIGURE
An antique 19-20th century African hand-carved wooden heddle pulley decorated with a human head symbolizing an idol. The item is mounted on a metal base. There are painted identification numbers on the inner side of the figure. Label of the Museum of African Art, NY on the bottom of the base. Provenance: The item came from the collection of Harold Rome, 1908-1993, an American composer and collector. Heddle pulleys belong to the culture of the Baule people, Ivory Coast, West Africa. They are used to ease the movements of the heddles while separating the warp threads. African Tribal Sculpture And Crafts For Collectors.
