JAPANESE MEIJI HODODA SHIMAZU SATSUMA POWDER BOX

An antique Japanese Satsuma pottery powder or trinket box. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Hand-painted round box with pronounced base. The sides are decorated with dragons. The lid depicts a Buddhist monks, or Arhat, with a white dragon. Two monks are painted on the inner side of the box. Gilt accents. There is a hieroglyphical signature on the bottom, Dai Nippon Satsuma Hododa with Shimazu family crest. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
