ANTIQUE RUSSIAN SILVER ICON MOTHER OF GOD OF TIKHVIN
An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon of Tikhvinskaya Mother of God. Fully hand painted under the silver oklad. The silver oklad is decorated with repousse work and engraved decor, hallmarked with an 84 silver standard, George the Victorious for Moscow, dated 1876, assay mark B.C, makers initials DG ? at the rim and halo. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Antique Russian Religious Items and Collectibles.
