A vintage Broadway theater window card poster of Les Miserables. Circa 1987 to 2003. Les Miserables is a musical by Claude Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil based on the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. The musical premiered on September 17, 1980, at the Palais des Sports in Paris. The English language production has been on stage for 35 years and is called the longest running musical in the history of the West End. The Broadway production opened on March 12, 1987, and ran until May 18, 2003, ending after 6,680 performances.
