Written by Alan Moore with cover art by Dave Gibbons, the series is presented as a set of twelve first printing direct market editions. Each issue features a distinctive cover design with a vertical title bar to the left edge bearing the series title WATCHMEN in various colours including green, red, and white. Marks include a printed black DC bullet logo alongside the issue numbering and a price of $1.50 $2.10/CAN. Each cover also displays a month and year date at the bottom left corner, such as SEPTEMBER 1986 on issue 1 and OCTOBER 1987 on issue 12.
