Late 19th Century Toye and Co. London and Penang Ceremonial Smallsword - A late 19th or early 20th-century ceremonial dress sword, likely of Masonic or fraternal interest. The straight, narrow blade is highly polished and features etched foliate and geometric scrollwork motifs to both faces. The blade bears a printed mark towards the ricasso reading TOYE & CO LONDON AND PENANG. The hilt is constructed from brass and features a ball pommel with ringed detailing, above a grip bound in tightly twisted brass wire. The flat crossguard is flared at the terminals in a style reminiscent of a medieval cruciform or Maltese cross. A red felt washer is present at the junction between the blade and the guard. The sword is housed in its original black leather-covered scabbard, which features a brass locket and chape. The locket is decorated with ringed detailing and a raised circular boss depicting a lion’s head. No other maker's marks or hallmarks are visible.
