William Woodhouse Oil on Canvas Coastal Seascape with Razorbills - A late 19th-century naturalist oil on canvas painting by William Woodhouse (British, 1857-1939). The dramatic, atmospheric composition depicts a rugged coastal scene featuring steep, dark vertical cliffs battered by a churning sea with heavy impasto white surf. A large colony of seabirds, including razorbills and puffins, is depicted perched on the rocky outcrops in the foreground and nesting upon the distant stacks under a moody, overcast sky. The work is signed William Dyce in dark cursive script to the lower left corner. The painting is housed in a substantial Victorian-style gilt frame with a deep cove profile and a beaded inner border. The verso of the canvas bears a black stencil for the artist supplier reading Artists' Canvas Prepared by Lionel Nathan & Co. Trade Mark London surrounding a central graphic of a kangaroo. Faint, illegible handwritten inscriptions in chalk or pencil are present on the lower portion of the canvas back.
