Europe, Ca. AD 1300-1400.An iron Great Helm is a remarkable piece of protective headgear that encapsulates the martial culture of the Medieval period. This helmet showcases a barrel-shaped design with a flat top, constructed by assembling large sheets of iron skillfully riveted together. Notably, this helmet completely encloses the wearer's head, providing maximum protection during combat. Strategically positioned on the front of the helm are small rectangular-shaped openings, to allow the wearer limited vision while ensuring the preservation of essential visual acuity. Furthermore, the presence of rows of holes in the front serves the crucial function of providing ventilation, as combat conditions within enclosed helmets could become particularly arduous. Great Helms held immense significance during medieval times as a key element of knightly armor. They were worn by knights, serving as a symbol of their social status, martial prowess, and chivalric ideals.
