Lot 20B - Attic Red-Figure Kylix Depicting a Departure Scene - TL Tested. Lot 28 - Greek Black Glazed Terracotta Snake. Lot 29 - Stunning Roman Marble Head Depicting Dionysus. The array also features remarkable and historically significant provenances, including: Mrs B. Ellison, a member of the Egyptian Exploration Society. The EES was established by Amelia Edwards and Reginald Stuart Poole in 1882 with the primary objective of exploring, surveying, and excavating in Egypt. Axel Guttmann was a well-known private collector of European weapons. His collection began with a Roman Bronze helmet and grew rapidly to over 1,000 pieces. Known for lending his collections for exhibitions and providing accessibility to researchers, Guttmann's collection was auctioned following his passing in 2002 and 2004. ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF WITH SOLDIER
Ca. AD 100.
A beautiful relief carved marble panel featuring a helmeted soldier and robed man, both in profile with their heads to the right. The first man is slightly higher in placement, perhaps suggesting higher status, such as a general. His face is thin, consisting of an aquiline nose and short beard and curly coiffure. The top of his robe or toga is draped around his shoulders. Before him is the soldier with a curly beard who wears a crested helmet. Perhaps this scene depicted a procession or event marking a military triumph. The Romans developed new forms of public monuments to celebrate their military victories, including arches and columns. These architectural masterpieces have been found throughout the Roman empire and are often relief carved with Roman soldiers. This fragment may come from one such relief and is an impressive testament to Roman military and artistic achievements.
