CHINESE MING DYNASTY STONE BUDDHA HEAD WITH HALO
Ca. AD 1368 - 1644.
A greyish-brown stone head of Buddha in high relief with a three-banded halo. The figure is depicted with an elaborate high topknot (Ushnisha), followed by abstract stylised facial features including high eyebrows, thick-lidded closed eyes, an aquiline nose, prominently curved lips, a small chin and characteristically large pendular ears. His shoulders, only partly preserved, are dressed in heavy robes. The figure’s head is flanked by two rows of stylised seated figures. The seated posture refers to the moment just before Buddha enters enlightenment. Mounted on a custom-made stand.
Size: 370mm x 310mm; Weight: 13.06kg
Provenance: From the private collection of an Oxford gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
