KHORASSAN BRONZE EWER
Ca. 8th-9th century AD.
A bronze ewer with a globular body, resting on an elevated concave foot, exhibits a harmonious balance of form and proportion. Its elongated neck, crowned with a flat rim, adds an elegant touch to the overall composition. The handle of the ewer is adorned with a pomegranate-shaped thumb support, which not only enhances its visual appeal but also provides ergonomic functionality. Islamic bronze ewers, such as this Khorassan example, played a vital role in the cultural and practical aspects of Islamic societies. Bronze ewers were commonly used for pouring and serving liquids, including water and other beverages, in various social, domestic, and ceremonial contexts. These vessels were integral to hospitality practices, symbolizing generosity and refinement. Their presence in Islamic households and public gatherings underscored the importance of communal bonding and conviviality. For a similar, please see Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 09 April 2014, London, Lot 109.
Size: L:240mm / W:130mm ; 600g
Provenance: Property of a London Islamic art specialist collector; previously in a collection formed since the 1980s.
