LARGE ROMAN LEGIONARY OPEN WORK BRONZE APPLIQUE
Ca. AD 100 - 300 A Roman open-work bronze applique comprised of an external circular band, divided into four corners. It is decorated with a phytomorphic motif with two leaves around the central hole. The composition of this decoration is well-proportioned and symmetrical. Bronze appliques with vegetal motifs were commonly used as decorative elements in ancient Roman architecture and art. These appliques were made of bronze and featured intricate designs inspired by plants, leaves, vines and flowers. They added ornamental detail to buildings and structures, showcasing Roman artisans' craftsmanship and artistic skill. For similar see: Les Bronzes antiques de Paris, 1989, n. 380.
