EGYPTIAN MIDDLE KINGDOM BRONZE AXE
Ca. 2055 - 1790 BC An Egyptian Middle Kingdom bronze axe. It has a duckbill-shape with a socket to attach a handle and two parallel holes. Axes like this were primarily produced in Syria-Palestine during the Middle Bronze Age IIA phase, which coincides with the 12th Dynasty in Egypt. These axes are found throughout the eastern Mediterranean world, from Anatolia in the north to the Nile Delta in the south. For example, a very similar axe head was discovered in a tomb in the late 12th Dynasty stratum at Tell el-Daba (ancient Avaris) in the delta. Size: 45mm x 100mm; Weight: 191g Provenance: Property of a London gallery, acquired on the US art market; Ex. NYC collection; Ex. Edward H. Merrin Gallery, NYC, acquired in the 1970s, formerly with Curtis Katz, NYC and Israel, acquired from The Merrin Gallery in the 1960s.
