ROMAN MARBLE INLAID PANTHERESS WITH A CUB
Ca. AD 50 - 250A Roman substantial marble sculpture (+100 kg) depicting a pantheress with her cub, carved on an integral stone slab serving as its base. The pantheress is shown standing on three legs, with the right foreleg raised and the tail wrapped around the hind leg. The head is raised, featuring a wide-open jaw, revealing teeth, pronounced nostrils, bulging eyes, and short erect ears. Throughout the body of the pantheress, a series of holes serve as compartments for inlays in black and brown hues. Nestled beneath her teats, the cub is depicted in a suckling position.Size: 650mm x 650mm; Weight: 100+kgProvenance: Property of a London gentleman; Ex. French collection, Paris, Parisian Gallery, 1970-90.
