ROMAN MARBLE BUST OF NOBLEMAN WITH LATER INLAID EYES
Ca. AD 200 - 300A Roman marble head of a nobleman from the eastern lands of the Empire, featuring a short beard that envelops full, gently parted lips. Gazing forth from recessed eyes, his stoic face features a broad nose, sunken cheeks, and a heavy brow, all surmounted by a bushy coiffure of tufted curls. Inlaid eyes, possibly later. Roman portrait patrons often chose to be presented with glistening bald heads, large noses, and extra wrinkles to express the years they had devoted to the Roman state.
