MEDIEVAL IRON SWORD DOUBLE EDGED
Ca. AD 1300 - 1400A medieval forged iron sword with a geometric pommel and curved crossguard. In Ewert Oakeshott’s typology of swords, this blade is closest to what he describes as a Type XV due to its noticeable lack of a fuller and its diamond cross-section. The medieval period saw swordsmiths develop new types of blades to combat the ever-increasing usage of plate armour. Earlier styles of swords made for slashing and cutting lost much of their effectiveness when used against improved armour, so artisans of the day saw the need for more acutely pointed blades with cross-sections reinforced for thrusting.Size: 907mm x 190mm; Weight: 910gProvenance: Property of a European collector. Formerly in the collection of Earl Mitchell, London 1990s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
