BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE BOWL
Ca. AD 1100 - 1300A Byzantine Sgraffito pottery bowl sitting upon an unglazed high foot with a deep basin, all enveloped in creamy white and emerald green glaze. The exterior of the straight walls are adorned with sgraffito decoration of floral motifs atop a striped ground. Sgraffito was an imitation of the more expensive first type of glazed islamic ceramic production. During this period, production of ceramics flourished, supplying local demand, but also a broad trading network with countries in the east, where the products of Constantinople are frequently found in excavations.Size: 80mm x 100mm; Weight: 185gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market since the 1970s.
