LARGE BYZANTINE GOLD PENDANT WITH SEVEN GARNET CABOCHONS AND FILIGREE
Ca. AD 700 - 900.An opulent Byzantine pendant of a delicate form, shaped from a hammered sheet of gold. The obverse face is decorated with thin gold wires, which form a spiralling peripheral border. The obverse face consists of six circular frames and a three-layered concentric circle adorned with dozens of petite twisted-wire ringlets. Set within squat bezels are six crimson garnet cabochons that provide a chromatic contrast to the yellow gold. Delicate gold items were the ultimate symbol of wealth and status in Byzantine-age Europe.Size: 34mm x 33mm; Weight: 12gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
