BYZANTINE BRONZE OIL LAMP ADORNED WITH A CROSS - Ca. AD 500 - 700.A Byzantine bronze oil lamp with a patent cross handle. There is a large filling hole in the centre which is set with a scallop shell-shaped lid that is hinged and still functions. The base of the lid is a large cross-shaped, looped handle. Such lamps would have been used either in the hand or with an additional stand. The lack of a chain and hanging loop means that this lamp was not suspended.
