VIKING SILVER GILT MEDALLION WITH CENTRAL SUN - Ca. AD 1000 - 1100.A Viking gilt circular pendant with a symmetrical geometric composition, featuring a repeated motif of lines around a central sun. The pendant has foliate shaped lines at regular intervals and is surrounded by a filigree border. Gold jewellery was the ultimate symbol of wealth and status in Europe at this time. They were most likely inspired by the fine jewellery of the Byzantine world.
