EGYPTIAN GREEN STONE STATUETTE OF BES
Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC.An Egyptian, late period, green stone statuette of the dwarf deity Bes with a smooth, highly-polished surface. He stands in full portrait atop an integral rectangular base with his arms draped to his sides and his hands flanking his bulbous abdomen. Enormous almond-shaped eyes eclipse the petite nose and lips, and his unruly beard is oftentimes depicted as a lion's mane in ancient Egyptian art. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, and protected them with the magical sign "sa." A statuette like this example would have been placed in the home as a ward against malevolent forces. Custom wooden display stand included.
