HELLENISTIC GILT SILVER BOWL WITH COMPLEX ORNAMENT
Ca. 300 - 200 BC.A Hellenistic shallow gilt silver bowl. The interior is decorated with chased and gilded embellishments, depicting a central flower surrounded by four pointed leaves and four acanthus leaves with scrolling tendrils. Around the centre is a band of continuous wave motifs, followed by a band of scrolling floral tendrils. There are additional plain, narrower bands, leading to the outer swollen rim. The dish is gilded except on the plain bands and pointed leaves. This type of vessel is clearly of Greek inspiration but most likely comes from the Hellenised East, within the Seleucid Empire, which encompassed much of Western Asia, stretching as far as Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. The bowl also has a custom made stand.Size: 175mm x 175mm; Weight: 250 (592g with stand)gProvenance: Property of a Central London Gallery, acquired on the US art market; formerly acquired on the UK Art market.
