ISLAMIC COPPER ALLOY ASTROLABE
Ca. AD 1500 - 1700. An astrolabe consisting of two parts, the bottom, referred to as the mater, and a lid. Items like these served as a star chart and physical model of visible heavenly bodies, and could even be used for determining latitude on land or calm seas. Size: 220mm x 140mm; Weight: 1.01kg Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
