STUNNING ROMAN BRONZE STATUETTE OF JUPITER WITH SILVER INLAID EYES
Ca. AD 200.A superb bronze figure of Jupiter rendered with immaculate detail. It exhibits a muscular physique as he stands dynamically in contrapposto. Shown nude, his athletic figure displays strong pectorals and delineated genitalia. His divine countenance is comprised of a furrowed brow, a noble nose, and small lips, all framed by a bushy coiffure and a short beard almost resembling a lion's mane. A wreath of oak leaves crowns his head. His left hand is raised, likely having previously held a sceptre symbolising his power as king of the gods, while he lowers his right arm. This piece is accompanied by an original stand. Size: 280mm x 90mm; Weight: 495g.Provenance: Property of a Sussex, UK, private collector; acquired in Munich, Germany in 2014; formerly acquired on the Bavarian art market in the 1990s; Art Loss Register Certificate: number 7944.CV dated 15 December 2014.
