EARLY BYZANTINE GOLD CROSS PENDANT WITH CENTRAL RED GARNET
Ca. AD 500 - 700.A gold cross pendant in the Latin form, composed of hollow gold arms that flare outwards, each ending with a flat cap. At the back junction, two rows of three raised dots are present and the tapered ends of each arm are adorned with four thin coils of gold wire. The front junction features a raised circular cell inlaid with a garnet cabochon, encircled by a border formed of pellets. At the top of the vertical arm is a suspension loop.A similar example hammered for £20,000 at Christie's, Live Auction 6060, Antiquities, 14 April 2011, Lot 365.Size: 55mm x 35mm; Weight: 5.5gProvenance: Property of a London gallery; previously acquired at the art market in Vienna; formerly in an Austrian collection formed prior to 2000.
