MEROVINGIAN BRONZE RING DEPICTING A MYTHOLOGICAL ANIMAL
Ca. AD 400 - 600. A bronze ring featuring a round hoop connected to a circular bezel. The bezel is decorated with an engraved mythological animal, facing left, with a long body and neck and a raised tail. In the early medieval period, mythological animals like dragons, griffins, and unicorns were popular in folklore, art, and literature. They symbolised power, mystery, and the unknown. They also appeared in religious allegories, representing virtues, vices, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. The fascination with these creatures persisted throughout the medieval period, leaving a lasting cultural legacy in Europe. For similar see: El Legado de Hefesto, n. 607, 608.
