Bidspirit auction | A NISHAPUR FIGURAL BUFFWARE POTTERY
A NISHAPUR FIGURAL BUFFWARE POTTERY BOWL DEPICTING A WARRIOR - Nishapur, Ca. 11th-12th century AD . A pottery bowl of circular form. The deep interior features a bold depiction of a stylised warrior figure, dynamically posed with a raised sword in one hand and a large round shield in the other. His elongated facial features and pointed headdress suggest a symbolic or mythological representation, while his spotted tunic and articulated limbs emphasize movement. The composition is executed in black, ochre, and red slip on a creamy white ground, characteristic of Samanid-era Nishapur ceramics. The surrounding field is decorated with abstract avian motifs, possibly evoking protective or auspicious symbolism. The raised rim is subtly accentuated with a darkened border, framing the central warrior. Size: 230mm x 90mm; Weight: 505gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
