Bidspirit auction | A RARE MUGHAL RIVETED STEEL
A RARE MUGHAL RIVETED STEEL CHAMFRON - India, Ca. 17th-18th century AD. A chamfron of striking anatomical form. This rare steel nasal guard is crafted from a single sheet of riveted and forged iron, shaped into a stylised bulbous form with two symmetrical raised hemispheres designed to shield the upper face and nose. The surface is meticulously perforated with regular rows of small circular ventilation holes to allow for breathability and visibility, while the raised central ridge provides added structural strength. The arched form and symmetrical lobes suggest it was intended to be worn strapped over the face, likely part of a larger facial defence ensemble, possibly accompanying a mail coif or helmet.Size: 470mm x 245mm; Weight: 940gProvenance: Property of a London Islamic art specialist collector; previously in a collection formed since the 1980s.
