Bidspirit auction | AN ISLAMIC LUSTRE MIHRAB OR
AN ISLAMIC LUSTRE MIHRAB OR CENOTAPH TILE - Ca. Mid-13th-Mid 14th century AD, or later. A glazed ceramic mihrab tile, elegantly shaped in the form of a pointed arch. The tile features raised relief calligraphy in cobalt blue, set against a white and black ground, creating a striking visual contrast. The letters have been luted onto the tile to create a complex example of Islamic ceramic art. This mihrab tile was likely part of a larger ensemble, either adorning the prayer niche (mihrab) of a mosque, madrasa, mausoleum or a cenotaph. ”In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. There is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Almighty, the Great. This is the guidance from our Lord, a light for those who seek righteousness.” The Arabic inscription is executed in elegant thuluth script. A smaller lustre-painted inscription is on the face of the pointed arch.Size: 390mm x 380mm; Weight: 6.55kgProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
