Bidspirit auction | A TIMURID HARDSTONE TOMB FRAGMENT
A TIMURID HARDSTONE TOMB FRAGMENT - Timurid Bukhara, Central Asia, or Herat, Afghanistan, Ca. AD 1450 - 1500 . A black basalt tomb fragment of square form, the sides and edges carved with chinoiserie arabesques, the central panel with a later pseudo-Kufic design. This piece appears to have been the end portion of what would have been a much longer oblong cenotaph. The carving of the vegetal decoration is exceptionally fine, while the pseudo-Kufic decoration is a later addition. For similar see: Thomas W. Lentz and Glenn D.
