Bidspirit auction | AN INDIAN COMPANY SCHOOL PAINTING
AN INDIAN COMPANY SCHOOL PAINTING DEPICITING 'THE HORSE AND PHALWAN' - Jaipur, India, Ca. 19th century AD. An opaque watercolour and ink on paper, depicting a finely caparisoned brown stallion with an ornately decorated red saddlecloth and gold-tipped embellishments. The horse is held by a man, possibly a groom or trainer, dressed in traditional white attire. The painting is inscribed at the top in English as ”The Horse and Phalwan, ” suggesting an association with a famed warhorse or prize stallion. This work exemplifies the naturalistic yet highly stylised aesthetics of the Company School, which emerged under British colonial patronage. The rendering of the horse’s musculature, the careful attention to textile patterns, and the atmospheric background indicate a blend of Mughal miniature traditions with European artistic influence.Size: 375mm x 270mm; Weight: 40gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
