GANDHARA GRAVE CULTURE TERRACOTTA JAR
Ca. 1200 BC. A Gandhara Grave Culture jar featuring a large rounded body, raising from a short, flat foot. The vessel narrows at the neck and flares out and upwards to form a large, funnel-shaped mouth. A stylised face is depicted at the front of the piece, displaying a tall aquiline nose and a long brow rendered by a continuous arched ridge. Three holes are pierced to render the eyes and mouth; possibly an abstract representation of the deceased. For a similar example, see The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number: AC1994.234.8a-b; and Virginia Museum of Fine Art, accession number: 87.453a-bSize: 390mm x 340mm; Weight: 5.1kgProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
