NEPALESE WOODEN SCULPTURE OF VARAHI - Ca. 17th century AD. > A carved wooden figure depicting the goddess Varahi, shown seated frontally within a foliate aureole. The deity is portrayed with a boar’s head and a robust human body, her expressive features emphasised by bulging eyes, flared nostrils, and an open mouth, conveying her fierce protective nature. Varahi is richly adorned with a tiered headdress, necklaces, and a patterned apron, the garments and jewellery rendered with incised and relief carving. Her hands are held before the chest in a gesture of offering or ritual significance, while the overall posture remains compact and hieratic. The figure retains traces of original polychromy in red, blue, and ochre pigments, highlighting details of the costume and facial features.
