BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, KASHMIR OR WESTERN TIBET - Ca. 10th - 11th century AD. > A finely cast bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni standing in a frontal, hieratic pose upon a lotus base. The figure is depicted wearing a close-fitting monastic robe that clings to the body, revealing the underlying form, with delicate linear folds cascading down the legs. The right hand is lowered in varada mudra (gesture of giving), while the left hand holds an attribute (possibly a lotus stem), suggesting an iconographic variation influenced by regional stylistic traditions. The face is serene, with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a composed expression, surmounted by a domed ushnisha. A circular halo frames the head, integrated into an elaborate backplate with foliate and flame-like motifs rising along the sides.
