NEPELESE GILDED COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF MANJUSHRI - Ca. 18th - 19th century AD. > A beautiful cast gilt copper alloy figure of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of transcendent wisdom, seated in vajraparyankasana (full lotus position) upon a double-lotus base. The figure is richly adorned with an elaborate foliate crown, beaded jewellery, and flowing scarves that loop gracefully around the shoulders. The right hand is raised, wielding the flaming sword (khadga), symbolising the cutting through of ignorance, while the left hand is held in vitarka mudra (gesture of teaching) and supports a lotus stem rising to the shoulder, surmounted by the Prajnaparamita manuscript. The face is serene and contemplative, with downcast eyes and refined features framed by large circular earrings.
