COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF TARA, PALA STYLE - Tibet, Ca. 17th century AD, or later. > A cast copper alloy figure of the bodhisattva Tara, seated in lalitasana (royal ease) upon a double-lotus base set on a stepped plinth. The right leg is pendent, resting gracefully upon a small support, while the left leg is folded atop the lotus throne, conveying both elegance and accessibility. The goddess is depicted with a serene, gently smiling expression, her face framed by elongated earlobes adorned with large circular earrings. She wears an elaborate tiered crown and is richly ornamented with necklaces, armlets, and a beaded girdle. The torso is sensitively modelled, reflecting the refined aesthetic of Pala-inspired sculpture. Her right hand is extended in varada mudra (gesture of granting), while the left hand is raised, holding the stem of a lotus that blooms beside her shoulder. The lotus motif, a key attribute of Tara, symbolises purity and spiritual awakening. The lotus base is crisply cast with rounded petals, and the stepped plinth beneath adds stability and visual weight. > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
