TIBETAN THANGKA OF VAJRADHARA - Ca. 19th-20th century AD. A finely detailed thangka depicting Vajradhara, the primordial Buddha and supreme embodiment of all Buddhas. Shown seated in meditation, rendered in deep blue, symbolising the expanse of the dharmadhatu (cosmic reality). He holds the vajra and ghanta (bell) crossed before his chest - the vajra in his right hand representing method and compassion, and the bell in his left symbolising wisdom, together uniting the two essential principles of enlightenment. He is richly adorned with jewelled ornaments, a crown, and silk scarves, accompanied by two bodhisattvas standing on either side. Surrounding the central figure are lineage masters, Buddhas, and meditational deities, arranged in orderly registers that narrate the transmission of the Vajrayana teachings.
