TIBETAN THANGKA OF THE WHEEL OF LIFE - Ca. 19th-20th century AD. A finely painted thangka depicting the Bhavachakra, or Wheel of Life, vividly illustrating the Buddhist concept of samsara - the cycle of existence. At the centre are the Three Poisons: a pig, a snake, and a rooster, representing ignorance, hatred, and desire. Surrounding them are the six realms of rebirth: the heavens, demigod realm, human realm, animal realm, hungry ghosts, and hells, each filled with finely rendered narrative scenes. Encircling the wheel are the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, illustrating the causal chain of existence. The entire composition is grasped by the fanged Lord of Death (Yama), depicted with flaming hair, bulging eyes, and a crown of skulls.
